So It Begins

A few days ago, I received a rejection e-mail from my university's literary magazine. Honestly, I wasn't terribly surprised; people sent in a lot of work this semester, and there are some incredible writers among the students and faculty at UVM. Obviously I was disappointed, because being published (even in a magazine whose readership is mostly limited to UVM's English professors and majors) is a big deal. It proves that someone other than you thinks that what you have to say is worth reading and sharing with others-- that's pretty cool.

While seeing your work in print is great, the truth about this submission, then rejection/publication process is that it's simply not the only way to disseminate ideas anymore. The accessibility of the internet means that media production is no longer limited to a small minority. Sites like YouTube, Twitter, Tumblr, and Yelp are powered by user-generated content, and since you're currently reading a blog, you probably don't need to be told how dramatically these media have changed our language, relationships, jokes, journalism, and even our methods of rebellion. People who were once limited to consuming media now create it constantly (power that can be used for good or not-so-good). 

I, for one, am going to use my magical Internet-Creation powers for good... well, at the very least, I'm going to try. Publishing a blog means making a few important assumptions, some of which are quite scary. If I submit half-baked ideas to a magazine or journal, it's likely that only a few editors will see it. Once writing is out in the cyber-world, however, everyone can read it and judge me accordingly. So I have to assume that my ideas are worth exposing, which leads to the second assumption: that anyone will actually read this. My readership is less under my control than the quality of my writing and ideas, but I can always hope that the better the latter is, the greater the former will be.

With that in mind, I hereby invite you and every person who stumbles upon Endwise to contact me when I say something you like or loathe, when you have ideas for a post, or if you simply want to say "Hi!"

P.S. I hope the design I came up with is acceptable. Sorting through templates is a nightmare. Believe me, there are some truly awful templates out there, some of which seem to have been crafted for the sole purpose of blinding innocent blog readers.
